I do want to have a life away from the PC. Cycles I would like to use for other work. Uses cycles while waiting for the network. All those bytes have to be written to the disk and the file system has to be updated. There are also the (ahem, minor) annoyances of building/unbuilding packets, managing ports, handling error conditions and other tasks that make it sufficiently worthwhile to do what one can to get some additional speed out of ANY program, especially when one is transporting gigabytes of data daily. In order to efficiently transfer files across a network, allowing for Big Endian/Little Endian ASCII/EBCDIC and other differences, there is is SOME code (non-trivial) required.
